In July 2019, Karas Gallery in Kyiv opened “Connection” (Ukrainian: «Зв’язки») — an exhibition by Nazar Symotiuk and Andrii Savchuk.

About the project

“Connection” is a dive into the depths of memory that grows out of our personal stories, our families and our cultural values. It is an attempt to stop the passage of time and to raise questions that matter: Who are we? Where do we come from? Where are we going? Such questions change a person from within, provoke philosophical reflection and push us to look for new meanings.

Our time calls for turning to the cultural heritage of the past and present, and for a wider exchange of cultural values between peoples — such connections help us understand our own national culture more deeply. The project suggests a kind of test: how far can we dive into our own history in order to foresee the important features of the future? “Connection” is a countdown that sends us into the past so that we can project our future.

The project was presented as a series of structural polychrome wooden reliefs based on geometric elements. It invites visitors into a kind of meditation — a “purgatory” for the mind that awakens awareness and lets one step away, for a while, from the endless flow of information, to rethink the values of contemporary life and break existing systems.
